Starting or developing your skin care routine should not be daunting. The best skin care routine is simple and straight forward and will bring a noticeable difference to the appearance of your skin in just a few short weeks.

Take these simple steps to enjoy great skin:

Your morning three step routine:

1. Cleanse

Start your morning routine by cleansing your face well which can be incorporated in your morning shower. This will clean your face of any residue from the moisturiser you applied the night before. To cleanse your face, you can using a cleansing lotion or a cleansing bar – which is similar to a bar os soap. It is important to check that the cleanser does not contain alcohol and that it is non-abrasive. Dampen  your skin with warm water before gently  applying your cleanser all over your face and neck. Do not be tempted to scrub your face as this will only irritate your skin. Rinse the cleanser away with more warm water and pat your face dry softly with a towel.

2. Moisturise your skin

They form a protective film that will protect your skin from all the dust, grime and pollution that you encounter every day. Using a day moisturiser is especially important to use all year round as during the winter months your skin is exposed to really cold temperatures.

3. Add a layer of protection

It is important to protect your skin from UV damage – even on cloudy days. After you have applied your moisturiser, a layer of sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor of 30 plus is the best way to protect your skin against UVA and UVB rays.

There are different types of sunscreen  available including ones that have been specially designed for sensitive skin. If you are planning on being out in the sunshine or enjoying any water sports, do make sure that you re-apply your sun protection regularly and especially once you have come out of the water.

Your evening skincare routine

1.  Cleanse

Your evening skincare routine is important as your skin will have the chance to recover and replenish while you sleep. Start your  evening routine with a thorough cleanse of your face and neck while you are taking  your  bedtime shower.

2.  Exfoliate

The  best way to achieve clear smooth skin  is to exfoliate your skin several times a week. Exfoliation is the term  given to the removal  of dead skin cells from the surface of your skin and is always done after you have cleansed your skin.

face care for menThere are several different products available on the market that do this job well including skin scrubs.which is a physical exfoliant that gently massages the skin on your face to remove the dead skin cells.

If your skin is prone to acne, the best product to use for exfoliating is a chemical exfoliant. These contain a variety of different acids such as salicylic acid and glycolic acid. This type of exfoliant  will not only clear away dead skin cells that can make your skin look dull, but will also get rid of any build -up of sebum in the pores of your skin.

Always check the packet for guidance about how often to exfoliate, but usually it is just a couple of times a week. It is not a good idea to exfoliate more often as this will not give give your skin the chance to replenish the cells.  It is a good idea to do this in the evening as some skins react to exfoliation and become a little red. If this does happen to your skin, it will have the night to settle down again.

3.  Apply moisturiser

A key part of your skincare routine is moisturising with a quality cream. This is important for two reasons. The moisturiser helps your skin to form an effective barrier against the elements and also helps to lock moisture into   the skin. This plumps the skin and this gets rid of small fissures and fine lines so that your skin looks fresh and youthful.

face care for menThere is a wide selection of moisturisers available and it will take a while to choose the one that is best for you. Some moisturisers contain active ingredients with anti-inflammatory properties. Both day and night moisturisers are available and it can be beneficial to invest in both.

Night moisturisers are usually thicker and richer and contain many nutrients and hydrating oils. Some moisturisers are seums containing many active ingredients to help reduce skin blemishes and these are often applied in addition to a moisturiser- check the instructions. The buzz word is ‘retinol’ which is a form of Vitamin A that is credited with anti-ageing properties and viewed by many as an essential ingredient in their moisturiser.

Although the idea of taking care of your skin has traditionally be targeted at women, in recent years having healthy skin has become a universal quest and is now something everyone can achieve. Skin specialists often say that a person’s skin is as revealing as a biography as  it reveals their age, scars and whether they have damaged their skin in the sun and how they care for their skin.

It is never too late to start or adjust your skincare routine and you are sur to be delighted with the results – what a win-win situation!
