A fully shaved head is a classic and timeless look that never goes out of style. There are various reasons why men opt for a shaved head including simplicity of care, because it is practical for their active lifestyle and as a stylish alternative when their hair starts to thin.

It should not be an impulsive decision, but a carefully thought through plan that you have discussed with your trusted barber. Some men do shave their own head but this can be quite challenging as it is time consuming and difficult to ensure that you have not missed a bit of hair!

Having your head shaved is quite an experience as many people want to reach out and touch your bald head or buzzed head! When your hair starts to re-grow – which it will do at an amazingly fast speed, people will want to stroke the new growth – bizarre! Many people will not ask  you why you have shaved your head though as they will presume it is because you have a condition that causes hair loss.

Many people firmly believe that when hair regrows it is a better density and texture but scientific trials have proven this to be a fallacy. Of course as well as having a completely shaven head, many barbers can create a wide bariety of artistic designs on buzzed heads

What Are The Benefits Of Shaving Your Head?

It’s A Great Way To Cope With Hair Loss

Whether you have a receding hairline, thin patches or have a skin condition like alopecia, shaving your head is a great way to hide these problems and far more comfortable than wearing a wig or hat.

Saves Time And Money

If you have your head shaved think how much time and effort you will save as  you won’t need to keep your hair looking good. Money will be saved too as you will not have to buy loads of hair products and you can save on barber’s bills if you shave your own head..

They say that a change is as good as a rest and bald men are said to be attractive and dominant

The best news is that it is not irreversible and if you decide you do not like your ‘new look’ you can grow it back very quickly. Interestingly, the hair often grows back in a better condition than it was before.

Dry Skin

When you start shaving your head regularly it  can make your skin very dry and irritated. The way to combat this is to apply plenty of

Irritating Skin

Even though you will shave your head as carefully as possible, it is almost impossible not to nick yourself or give yourself ‘razor burn’ which is red inflamed skin. To minimise the chances it is best to prepare your scalp to be shaved in much the same way that you do your face.(see below)

Ingrowing Hairs

This is another problem that men get with shaved faces and it can happen on heads as well. It is important to  follow the direction of hair growth when you shave. Interestingly, this problem is a common occurrence for men with tightly curled hair.

A Sensitive Head

Without its usual covering of hair, your head will feel far more sensitive to differences in weather temperatures and you may well have to invest in a woolly hat if you don’t have one!

If you want to shave your head yourself, it’s important to give yourself plenty of time as it is not a job to be hurried. You need to do it in a room with really good lighting and mirrors – including a good hand mirror so you can check awkward places.

It is best to use a safety razor with new blades. You can use an electric shaver, which will be quicker, but the finishing result is not as smooth. With an electric shaver, there is no need to use shaving cream or to rinse the  blades.

You Will Also Need…

  • A good pair of sharp hairdressing scissors and/or clippers
  • A razor with a clean new blade (old blades cause nicks and cuts)
  • Plenty of good shaving cream
  • A good quality moisturiser or aftershave balm
  • A soft hand towel
